Richard I've seen this before on a client's machine, "Windows cannot play the
sound C:\WINDOWS\media\The Microsoftsound.wav. Your soundcard may be in use."

I had replaced the RAM and he thought it had something to do with that and
wanted me to fix it. Of course RAM has nothing to do with it and since he did
not want to pay I told him to call Creative Labs for help since he had just
installed a new Sound Blaster card.

From what he told me, the settings were wrong. He told me he did not see
exclamation marks in Device Manager when I first tried to help him over the
phone, but I was not there to verify this. Tech support at Creative Labs had him
change, from his description, the Basic Settings in the Resource Tab for the
sound card Properties in Device Manager. Something in the IRQs he said. His
modem then went out and he called the modem's Tech support and they played with
the same thing. Everything is working now.

The point of the long story is that I did not physically see or fix this.
However, the problem is a conflict in the resources even though you may not see
exclamation marks. I would play with those settings to fix it.

HTH,

Jose
