Annette,Since you have come to this point and before you toss it, why not first try to write zeros to the drive to clear it of all data and than see if you can run FDISK/MBR and than FORMAT C: from a boot disk. I may have missed it but you didn't say who manufactured the drive nor the OS you are using. A repair disk from the manufacture and a boot disk designed for your OS is very helpful in such problems.By the way when drive is faulty, the data is unrecoverable with any software program that I know about. That why ONTRACK would not work. Also, the free trial only tells you that it is recoverable but it won't recover anything. Naturally they you to send the drive to them. (cost $ 200 to $2500) UGH. This error prevents scan disk from fixing this drive. Then I click ok and when it continues to boot I get the blue screen of death that says "disk write error" "unable to write to disk in drive C: data or files may be lost". Thats why I was trying to hook up as a slave, to see if there was anything that was recoverable. I tried the trial version of the ontrack software but I didn't get any results. I think it's just toast now. There is nothing on the hard drive worth spending money on recovering. I appreciate everybody's help though!Annette--------------------------------------------------------On 4 Nov 2003 Annette Robart wrote:Subject: Re: [PCBUILD] No drive letterThe thing is, this is a hard drive off of another computer with important information on it that I need to save. It was starting to get disk write errors and I just wanted to hook it up as a slave on another computer to get the information off of it. Could it be that the hard drive is just toast?? I just installed it brand new a month ago.--------------------------------------------Mike Michel ("[log in to unmask]") 11/06 --answered: Annette,Since your were getting disk write errors-- it is very posible that the drive is toast. Have you tried it as the only drive in your system? (as a master drive)If it can't be set up in BIOS either manualy or automatic, than it must be defective. If your having problems with harddrive failers in a computer, than the power supply is a suspect. As a general rule, as they get old the dc output voltage will rise and decrease the normal life of a Harddrive or a CD-ROM. So an accurate measurement of the voltage output is essential.Mike Michel_______________________________________________Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web!The NOSPIN Group is now offering Free PC Techsupport at our newest website:http://freepctech.comPCBUILD's List Owners:Bob WrightDrew Dunn
