Background --
I'm running Windows 2K on a laptop with an Intel Mini PCI Combo card
(combination Xircom MPCI+ Modem 56 WinGlobal and Intel PRO/100+ MiniPCI). I
connect to the Internet using ADSL with the Ethernet connection, and have my
regular phone line connected to the modem for a fax. I wanted the fax to
turn itself on when I turn on the computer instead of having to turn it on
manually, so I went into "Services", "Fax Service", "Properties", and
changed the "Startup type" to Automatic instead of Manual.
Problem --
After doing this and restarting the computer my network connection shortcuts
disappeared, and when I opened "Network and Dialup Connections" (from the
Control Panel) the connections were gone!
Workaround --
I fooled around with the Network and Dialup Connections window, and found
that if I go into "Advanced" tab and open "Dialup Preferences" and then just
close the "Dialup Preferences" window, if I then go to "View" and press
"Refresh", my connections reappear!
I also tried changing the "Startup type" of the fax service back to Manual
to see if that would solve the problem, and when I restarted the computer,
lo and behold the network connections were right where they should be
(including their shortcuts).
Question --
What's going on??? Why should changing the fax service from manual to
automatic affect the network and dialup connections? Is this a bug?
TIA,
David Landau
