I would install it as whatever it appears to be to the driver. I have 
a external serial modem installed on a computer with no serial port. 
I am using a serial to USB adaptor that emulates a serial port. 
Windows, sees the adaptor as a USB serial adaptor  and installs it 
under Ports (COM & LPT) as a USB Serial Port. It installs the modem 
as on a  SB Serial Port (COM3).

Just make sure your adaptor is guaranteed to work with the version of 
windows you are using. Vista and above requires signed drivers and 
all newer PCs are 64 bit. A cheap adaptor may or may not work. Good luck.
