Check the file C:\WINDOWS\DOSSTART.BAT You may need to edit this file if necessary. Any line with an exit statement, or win would cause a restart. OR just rename this file to something like dosstart.bak and try it again to see if this is the problem.

Good luck....

> I recently formatted "C" and reinstalled Windows 98. Since then I can not start the computer in DOS mode. When I click shut down, then restart in MS DOS mode I see messages from the sound card then C:\> , C:\> Then the computer beeps and restarts Windows 98. The start disck and DOS Prompt work. Does anyone have any hints as to where I should look for the problem.
