  Your monitor is capable of 1280 x 1024 resolution, so that's not the
problem.  Most modern video cards are also capable of this (a very few low-
end or older cards are not), so that's not the problem either.
  The most likely issue is that Windows doesn't know how to configure your
video card for a higher resolution, usually because it is using the Windows
default VGA driver instead of a driver specifically for the video card you
have.  Perhaps the correct driver was never installed, or has become
corrupted.
  That IBM model normally came with an S3 "Trio 3D" video card which is
capable of supporting the 1280x1024 resolution of your monitor.  So I would
download a fresh Windows 98 driver for this card and install it, and that
should let you select the higher resolution.
