Apparently, according to Fred Langa, the OS does make a difference:
"That's worth repeating: Right now, Win7 and Server 2008 are the only
OSes that offer full, native support for trim. They're the only OSes
that let you get the most out of an SSD right out of the box!" He also
states that performance degradation is inevitable over time.
I have a small SSD in my Linux netbook, and, while it seems fast enough,
the virtue I see is it's resistance to shock. I dropped this Netbook on
asphalt whie it was running, and there was no dmage other than a dent in
the corner.
This article has a great deal more info:

"One thing you can be sure of is that the shiny new SSD you just bought
isn't likely to continue performing at the same level it did when you
first pulled it out of the box."

I'm in an active thread on this elsewhere and they posted this back to
me...

I wish I have had it for my last reply.

In my system, the OS boots about twice as fast as it does with standard
HD. The SSD is still rather expensive, but prices are coming
down. Do note that there are big differences in speed of writing between
the SSD devices. Check the specs before buying.
