Well, kind of. But, I thought I would share.

Quick history: HP 8380 running Windows 98 was working pretty much as I was
used to: Unstable. Erratic, inexplicable blue screens, black screens,
whatever. Ran online virus scan, which spotted something. Couple weeks
later, installed McAfee VirusScan, which located and deleted JSSeeker virus.
But then, although I could get on AOL, I could only read mail . . . could not
surf the net. Never occurred to me I should just try to uninstall McAfee.

After a series of botched attempts to fix things, I got to the point where
the best I could do is get a C:\prompt. Couldn't access Windows at all. I
had finally decided to bite the bullet and install new hard drive, as a
master, and make the existing drive the slave. Well, went to written HP
documentation that came with the computer to determine how I needed to set
the jumpers on the old drive, and not surprisingly, it was of no assistance.
However, I did notice a section on using the BIOS setup. Lo and behold,
there was a comment about how you could go into BIOS and return to original
factory defaults. Figuring I couldn't get in any deeper than I already was,
I figured what the hey.

Well, returning to factory BIOS defaults worked! Still don't have Internet
access. Uninstalling VirusScan is next in line. But, all problems should be
as easily solved as this one. Just took me a couple weeks and no small
amount of sweating.

Not that I don't still have other problems. (Oh, do I have problems.) Check
out "Bad power supply?" post. In the meantime, thanks for your support, and
for giving me the confidence "To go where no man has any sense going, but
hey, those computers can only wipe out 3 years work on that Great American
Novel, so what's the big deal?"
