40 GB HDD IN ASUS TX97-XE MOBO

One of my friends has an old pc, ASUS tx97-XE mobo, HDD 4.3 gb, ...
He bought a new FUJ HDD 40 GB.
The pc does not recognize  the new HDD, however we tested a FUJ 20 GB HDD
and it is recognized.
The PC is runnimg W98. The new 40 GB HDD works OK in other newer pc.
Is it a matter or BIOS or what?
