i've had the samsung ML1430 since january, and i love it.  you can find it for around $150 (might need a rebate for that price).  that saves you enough money to buy several toner carts.
it's my first laser, so i can't compare it to other lasers, but after years of buying inkjet carts, i'm now printing pages i would've normally skipped over.  the printer comes with a 1000 page  toner cart.  a replacement prints 2500 pages i believe, and costs around $70.  i'm expecting 1000 pages to last me around 3 years, minimum.  www.bestbuy.com usually has a good price on the printer.  you can read reviews on it at www.amazon.com
