A mount ago PC-Mag have made a benchmark on low cost scanner and the
editorial choice was:

       Epson Perfection 636U Editor choice PC Mag Sept 1999

The quality was equal to the average but the scan speed was far ahead of the
others. So if the speed is a concern that could a good choice.
