Sometimes it seems to me that sweet things have a strange chemical taste, as
if excess sugar is foreign to me now and tastes like a "chemical".

I had a similar experience today. For the first time in 6 months, I
decided to eat some non paleo foods such as sugar, chocolate, bread buns
and rice products (cakes).
I had to stop the chocolate because the last was so "strong". The grain
products simply tasted horrid, almost as if they were a gluey paste in
my mouth, I couldn't bring myself to swallow it.
I noticed in each of these foods, the only thing I could eat or felt
like eating was the paleo-like part (high fat part such as cheese etc.)
It was an interesting experience for someone who was a carb addict,
eating over 80% carb diet a year ago to about 30% now.

Dean.
