I have a hunch that the protein should be kept within tighter limits than the carbs or fat.  Of course, people with sugar problems will have to more severely limit their carb intake.

We can burn carbs and fat more easily for fuel.  As a source of energy, protein is more costly.  As a source of storage fat, it's more costly.  And getting rid of the byproducts of gluconeogensis is also costly.
