They were bad, granted, but no different from the way those peoples
treated other nearby weaker tribes. The pacific islanders were famous
for slaughtering and barbecuing their enemies. The Native Americans
fought each other almost continuously. The Sioux in particular were
hated by their neighbors for their genocidal wars. A hint of that
comes out in the movie Dances with Wolves, where Indians are shown
aiding the cavalry against Costners friends. I do not recall the name
of that tribe, but they had been nearly eliminated by the Sioux. The
Aztecs and Mayas conducted wars for the sole purpose of catching
enough victims for their blood sacrifices and cannibal feasts. The
only difference is that the europeans won, so we remember their deeds
more clearly.
