If I can even get to sleep then, I'll wake up ready to go at 3 a.m.

I think that age has something to do with this, as well. Young people
sleep longer. (I'm 53.)

I haven't used an alarm clock at all for about twenty-plus years.

I'm not sure what "ought" means in this context. I'm not forcing
myself to do without rest at all.
