There are lots of different kinds of lab tests, so maybe you want to
post the numbers as an opener. Unless you're concerned about putting
out personal medical information for all to see in perpetuity in the
archives! In that case, you should have started with "My
brother-in-law just got back his test results..."

Most places you look these days are saying the TG/HDL ratio is the
most important test of blood lipids, and should be under 2.0, or
preferably under 1.0. Beyond that there is CRP, and a bunch of
different, more expensive tests:

Then, if you really want to be sure, there is the heart scan, or
calcium scoring, which directly images your arterial plaque using EBT
or CT scan.

Here are my numbers and ratios, before and after paleo and a 32lb.
weight loss:

12/1998: TG/HDL 74/50 1.48 (before paleo low-carb)
02/2005: TG/HDL 47/59 .797
04/2007: TG/HDL 62/54 1.15
11/2007: TG/HDL 28/62 .45 (working out)
08/2009: TG/HDL 43/64 .67 (not working out for couple years)
