As one of Kesterson's links points out, protein above the amount  
needed for tissue creation and repair is coverted to glucose via  
gluconeogenesis. Phinney in his review "Ketogenic Diets and Physical  
Performance" says the "optimum window for human metabolism" is 1.2 to  
1.7 grams of protein per kg of reference body weight daily. He goes on  
to say that protein intake higher than that can suppress ketogenesis.
