As Bruce Chatwin pointed out in "The Songlines", Humans have been nomadic
huntergatherers for most of out entire existence. This desire for a change
of scene results in tourism being the largest industry in the world.

When one finds oneself in a rut and can't afford a vacation ( or in the case
of ancient China, vacations haven't been invented yet) a similar result can
be had by merely rearainging the furniture. One's entire perspective of the
world can be changed by merely moving a chair or painting.

Ray - who spent two hours trying to fit a new hawk print onto the living
room wall today.
