IMHO They survived by having many species of intestinal microbes, which are
proven to tranform the odd things we eat into good nutrients.
Note the behaviour of babies, who, when confronted with dirt/earth/soil,
eat it. Mothers think this is wrong. Au contraire, they are acquiring the
microbes needed for good nutrition.
We kill these microbes with antibiotics, preservatives, microwaves etc.,
then wonder why we have nutritional deficiencies.

Of course, it is hard to sell dirt. This may be why we don't hear much of
it. ;)
