Steppe-tundra existed in southern Africa as well as Australia and South
America when the Antarctic ice sheet was extended to these continents during
ice ages.  It was perhaps the African steppe-tundra that saw the first homo
sapiens but it was the larger Eurasian steppe-tundra that allowed their
greatest geographic distribution and population.
