Hello folks,

I've done the week or two of lurking, and it's probably time to officially
say hello and introduce myself. I'm a grad student living in Toronto, and
a little over a year ago, I was diagnosed with PCO (polycystic ovarian
disease) - and this is how I started to become educated about proper diet.
I joined a listserv for women with PCO, and they taught me that a
low-carbohydrate diet was the first (and often most effective) way of
treating PCO, an endocrine disorder affecting hormone and insulin levels.
On the PCO list, most women follow the CAD, Atkins or Zone diets. On CAD
(with increased exercise) I lost weight and saw my hormone levels improve.

One day it dawned on me that OF COURSE I responded well to low-carb/hi
protein eating. It vaguely resembled the traditional diet of my Cree
family, who have been hunting/trapping/gathering all year round up until
my father's generation. Even in my misguided years as a pro-grain
"vegetarian", I ate no meat in the city, but happily lived on goose,
moose, duck, rabbit and more goose while in the bush. From what I gather,
Neanderthin eating describes a similar type of diet, which is why I'm
here.

Now if only I could convince others. There's been propaganda in the Cree
communities (in northern Quebec, Canada) urging folks to eat more grains,
less fatty wild meats. I have my suspicions about the origins of this
bogus health advice, but I've just begun the research. Anyone else here
involved with, or "in the know" about the modern northern Native diet?

I've had little luck finding a copy of Neanderthin in any bookstores in
Toronto. Who is the publisher?

Thanks
Cheyenne Loon
