I do not doubt that interbreeding occurred, sometimes, but it is still
different species, both.

Apparently at least some male Homo Sapiens Sapiens individuals hesitate
to interbreed with neandertal women, at least without help of drugs.

No one knows if they ever lived close to each other. Lots of archeology
material from the ice age is now under several meters of sea water. And
that is probably some of the most important material.
