Sweet mercy! I just don't get it. Six breastfed infants in Georgia
developed rickets. The CDC's answer?

"Human breast milk contains minimal vitamin D," explained Dr. Shanna
Nesby-O'Dell of the CDC. ``If an infant is breast-feeding, the parent and
physician should discuss the need for vitamin supplementation,'' she told
Reuters Health. ``Toddlers that are being weaned from breast milk should be
transitioned to a vitamin D-fortified cow's milk or a beverage that is
nutritionally equivalent,'' she added.

``While cheese and other dairy products are an important source of
nutrition, they don't contain vitamin D, and many parents are unaware of
that,'' Nesby-O'Dell said. ``Milk and adult breakfast cereals have
some vitamin D, but the primary source for toddlers is vitamin D-fortified
milk,'' she added.

Go to the link below for the full Monty. The CDC refers to numerous other
problems for the children riddled with rickets, inlcluding a lack of dietary
protein and calories. Oh, yeah, and the fact that they were hospitalized to
begin with. They're answer? Vitamin D supplementation. Is is just me, are
are they missing some major clues in this equation? What's next, shooting
the messenger and saying breast feeding is BAD or something? Sorry, but
this one is almost frightening.
