Ah, the point is that dogs and wolves are roughly the same size overall, but wolves still have a larger brain for their size. OK, some dogs are severely inbred so are a lot smaller  or bigger per se, but the idea is that, if one adopts the brain-size to body ratio measurement-aspect of intelligence, wolves have a far higher such ratio and are therefore far more intelligent than dogs, quite aside from studies showing a higher intelligence for wolves.  A higher intelligence is, logically, a surer sign of a chance at survival than anything else. To give an example, there are a number of humans, with a sizeable brain,  who are, unfortunately,  severely mentally-retarded who could not possibly survive at all without lots of access to advanced technology and the manifold resources of an advanced civilisation.
