Straight sugar, removed from its original surroundings, and in far
higher concentration and quantity than one could eat in whole fruit.
The idea of proportion is very important to "get" about Paleo. Many
things can be eaten, but are unnatural only when concentrated or made
into a more than occasional opportunistic item. You may or may not be
familiar with the "mono" or "instincto" type of primitive eating: one
item at a time, raw, no seasoning, no mixing of foods, and eating until
the taste buds say "OK, that's enough of that...." You may never wish
to indulge in this, but the principle is sound: that the body knows
instinctively what to choose to eat, and how much of it is needed.
Artificial concentration, especially by removing fiber, or anything
that adds labor to the eating, like bones, peels, husks, hides, makes
foods entirely too easy to OD upon. Also remember that modern fruits
are far higher in sugar than their uncultivated forebears, so actually
we should "stop" at even less than one piece in a lot of cases.
