Diet and Depression
There is no doubt that depression (as clinically defined) is associated with
reduce levels of neurotransmitters (nerve communication chemicals). Superb
reference in great detail= Neurobiology of Depression, Scientific American
June 1998 www.sciam.com

These chemical are released at the nerve to nerve junctions called synapses.
Guess what the chemicals are parcelled in? OMEGA 3's.
It is essential to ensure a good omega 3 intake and monitor your omega 6
intake (to make sure it's not excessive) if you want to follow a diet to
help depression. The Omega Diet by Artemis SImopoulos has an excellent
section on this- mentions how a team of psychiatrists in Japan couldn't find
a single elderly person with depression when they went into a Japanese
fishing village

It's a bit like having a shortage of chocolates because there aren't enough
chocolate boxes even though there are plenty of chocolates!

All this stuff about carbs affecting your serotonin uptake is pretty shaky
mainly because changing tryptophan entry to the brain doesn't necessarily
lead to an increase in serotonin levels. ie I don't believe it.
