Having worked for Child Protective Services I have seen both sides:
Most social workers are not 'some social worker' but a person working
with lots of supervision, incl. a judge. Unfortunately, their education
and training may not be very good.
And I've worked with hellish zealots whose main claim to knowing what
it's like to raise kids is babysitting their nephews or taking care of
their dogs.
I always tell people (and just did recently) that if you get a call from
CPS, call your lawyer immediately.

They already can. As long as some social worker thinks whatever you're
doing might be abusive or neglectful (or just something they don't
understand), they can intervene and make your life a nightmare.
