I believe that, for males at least -- females probably had different
exercise patterns -- one to three sessions of high intensity weight
lifting a week is imitative of our ancestral hunting patterns.  The
other times should be spent in relative relaxation.  This has worked
wonders for me.  Folks simply cannot believe I am in the shape I am in
with about half an hour of total workout time per week.  I really feel
sorry for those who slog it out six times a week on a treadmill.  It's
unnecessary, even counterproductive compared to the HIT protocol. 
Infrequent, brief, intense is the way to go.
