the word used at the time was sweet potatoes. It was the difference
between
eating sweet potatoes (traditional) and for want of a better term normal
potatoes,
that caused their health issues.

I had heard the terms intermixed in speech, so it was my mistake to
think
that the two were the same (seet potatoes and yams). Sorry for any
confusion.
