I don't know where you live, but if you can find a forested area with
sassafrass trees, you're all set. Pull up some little ones and bring home
the roots. Clean them, cut or chop into little pieces, and put them in
boiling water for a good long while. The water will turn tea-color, and
the root beer flavor is quite yummy. Sweeten or not, as you choose.

I would guess that ancient hunter-gatherers might have occasionally chewed
on a piece of sassafrass root as a treat. But I don't know if there are
any "alien" substances in there that could do damage if you drank a lot of
the stuff over a long period of time. I'm a "reform caveman," not an
"orthodox" :^) . I eat non-paleo foods in small quantities; even so, I
figure I'm a heck of a lot healthier than I was before I read NeanderThin.
