Trish, you have me a bit stumped. Except for not knowing exactly what your
diet is, it sounds like extreme insulin resistance. I agree with Ray about
a "fat fast" and excess protein converting to glucose.

With one caveat, however. If you still have significant excess body fat,
then you can have a way higher percentage of dietary calories coming from
protein without ramping up gluconeogenesis, as long as you are running a
calorie deficit and you are getting that body fat to burn. In other words,
you could be on a very low carb, low protein, high fat diet that consists
of eating mostly just small amounts of lean animal protein. The "high fat"
part is being supplied by your own fat stores.

That's the basis of the "protein sparing modified fast." You might want to
download Lyle McDonald's e-book on the topic. That would be $30 very well
spent. It's called the "Rapid Fat Loss Handbook," and tells you how to do
it safely and effectively.
