Hi all,
my name is Emiliano. First of all I'd like to thank everybody for the wealth
of knowledge being shared on this list. It's useful indeed.

I’m forty, and since 2005 I suffer from IDDM (type 1 diabetes) and to me
food is of big concern.
When I started reading about paleo, it all looked so simple and logic, so
I've enthusiastically joined the cavemen tribe.

I've been on strict paleo for almost three months now and I would like to
share my experience, and, if possible, have your impressions about what's
going on:

First month: my body started adapting to the new food regime. My body weight
dropped from 93 to 90 kilos (I'm 1,83 but quite muscular since I run\hike
almost every day). My blood sugar went up and down, I found it very
difficult to have a steady going. I felt really good, full of energy, even
tough I had some trouble sleeping (which I always had...). Hunger just
disappeared.

Second month: blood sugar was incredibly low and steady. I stopped taking
"fast" insulin (while I continued basal). My performances (I'm talking about
running, here...) were better than ever. I experienced neverending energy, I
just couldn't get tired. My wife, half joking, told me I was a bit strange,
like exhalted. Troubled sleep. Body weight continued to decrease to 87kg and
I lost a bit of muscle mass. No hunger at all, I could go on a whole day
with a handful of chestnuts. I had a medical checkup and my Total\HDL and
triglicerids where just fine (206 - 56 - 79). I spoke about paleo to my
diabetes specialist. He knew Atkins and was very skeptical. He said I could
experience some improvement in the first months, but in the long run it
wouldn't have worked and I would have to go back to insulin. In addition, my
kidneys could get damaged by the protein "overload". All in all, I felt
super.

Third month (still going): blood sugar started again going up and down, and
even tough I just do not eat CHO's, it's pretty much out of control. In
average it's not really high (about 140Mg\Dl) but I feel like I can't
control it. I had to start again insulin to try and keep it down. Energy is
still pretty decent, but I've lost that “übermensch” feeling I had before. I
have to say that at the beginning of the month I had to go through a very
difficult and psychologically trying moment (everything’s fine now, thanks
god) and that might have caused the negative trend in blood sugar. Body
weight still is 87kg.

So, here’s the story.

What is going on?
Has any of you experienced anything similar?

Excuse me if I’ve been too lenghty and if this is not the right “place” to
post this kind of stuff, but if it is, I would be extremely thankful to have
your thoughts and comments.

Emiliano
