Same here.

What did the doctor say in response?

I haven't found any two diet experts or books that agree on every food. I
question a few of Audette's recommendations on foods to allow and prohibit
as well (and noticed at least one contradiction in his advice), but despite
the fact that I disagree with both authors on some minor points, I still
think they are the best diet books out yet. The most important thing is they
explain the theory of Paleolithic/evolutionary nutrition and try to fashion
a diet with today's foods that fits that theory.

You're having read The Paleo Diet and NeanderThin probably explains how you
were able to recognize bunions as a likely symptom of modern foods syndrome.
Hope yours get better rather than worse.

I don't know. I think a lot depends on the individual's system.

I haven't tried it yet. It's rather expensive to buy the pre-made stuff and
I'm not convinced yet that there's no downside to grain-fed animal fats that
most people use in making home-made pemmican. I intend to try it some day,
but it's not a big priority.

> Have you tried cracklins? ... This fat has the mouth feel of crackers with
butter on top.

Nope. Sounds good. The closest thing I've tried is pork rinds, which I
didn't like at all, but cracklins look like they would taste much better.
It's too bad that pigs are fed so much crap, because if they were fed a
species-appropriate diet they would offer a plentiful source of healthy
fats. That will be a future economic opportunity once the Paleo diets get
big. Feeding pigs appropriately would be rather expensive, though, since
their natural diet isn't as simple and cheap as the grass and other field
greens of beef cattle. There is plenty of grass-feed beef on the market
today--I wonder if there are any biologically-appropriate-feed pig meats
sold anywhere?

Don't know.
