Following is a snippet from an email I got from Ron Hoggan (coauthor of the excellent book "Dangerous Grains")

Jim > I've enjoyed both Dangerous Grains and your thesis. What do you make of the idea that glucose can increase paracellular peptide uptake?

Ron > think that the inference that Reichelt drew from such research is valid. I'm not surprised that all "normal" subjects are showing some degree of paracellular absorption. After all, a large majority of us are eating unprecedented quantities of refined carbs, gluten, and other mediators of intestinal permeability. As a culture, we are vigorously thwarting one of the most effective tools we have for protecting ourselves from environmental toxins. I suspect that ADD and ADHD children are simply reflecting our industrialized digression from our evolutionary roots. This is very similar to the canaries that were lowered into the mines during the industrial revolution. They were the first casualties of foul air, just as our children are the casualties of our disastrous trends in nutritional wisdom.
