I think that may be part of it, yes, alcoholism is very similar metabolically
to diabetes.

But, as a recovering alcoholic, I can tell you most assuredly that alcoholism
is more than a matter of too much carb and not enough fat -- I would assert
that it's much more like an allergy than a simple chemical imbalance.  An
alcoholic cannot trick his or her body into tolerating alcohol by adding more
protein/fat to the diet (while still ingesting the alcohol).

However, since diabetes and alcoholism are so similar metabolically, I have
noticed that I share with many recovering alcoholics a higher-than-usual
sensitivity to sugar.
