The evidence for shortevity depends on the modern belief that aging "just
happens", and that this has always been true.

I don't agree with this belief.

IMHO the biblical book of genesis and the Sumerian creation story both
show that in ancient times men lived much longer than now.There should be
others that I've forgotten.

Why reject these stories?
