when i kept chickens,  the yolks were always a deep orange color, more than
yellow, and the hens ate plenty of fauna -- grubs, earwigs, whatever -- plus
weeds, grasses, and a mix of grains and seeds ("scratch", it's called).

also, i think the hardness of the shell tells you if the hen is getting
enough calcium or not.
