In addition to salt being available for those living at seashores, I'd
include those living within several days walking distance of "salt flats
."

I vaguely remembered reading about "salt flats" in grade school or high
school.  Last winter when I drove from Carlsbad Caverns, in New Mexico,
South to Texas and through the Guadalupe Pass, I found myself in a
strange landscape:  a huge, white salt basin stretching for many miles.
What had once been a sea, had become part of the Chihuahuan dessert and
"salt flats" have remained to this day.  The Mescalero Apaches traveled
great distances to collect the salt from the flats.

I have no idea how many early "inland" peoples had access to salt and
cannot furnish references, but I believe there was some inland
availability of salt, at least in the southwest.
