Mrs. Grieve's-- A Modern Herbal is a phenomenal book from many, many,
many decades ago. There's what is purportedly a searchable version at

I saw a hardbound, on-sale copy of this book at Barnes & Noble over
the weekend (on one of the front display tables), in case you want
something not on the internet to hang onto. On the one hand, while it
doesn't have safety info collected since, say, whenever this thing was
actually written... it seems to have a lot of other safety, use and
anedotal info that may have been LOST since then. It's a great read,
too.
