#1. Oxygen causes the iodine to 'disappear'.
#2.  Iodine is immunosuppressive.

I read somewhere that if you take iodine ticture and paint a circle about the size of a quarter on your belly, it will absorbe into the system. The quicker the spot disappears the more you need it.  I don't know if it is BS or real.  The writer said it was a good way to absorbe some iodine.
