For all you paleos who eat sea salt (ie Celtic Sea Salt for example) and
who sweat profusely during exercise or in the hot summers -- do you notice
that lack of salt causes transient breathlessness?

We've had a humid heatwave the last several weeks here in NYC and I'm
sweating constantly outside and of course really profusely during
running/working out. I have been experiencing bouts of breathlessness and
my husband suggested I eat some salt of my palm ie 1/4+ teaspoon. I did
this yesterday plus added extra salt to my meat. This AM I ate more salt
before my run and so far, no breathlessness.

During the breathless bouts, my blood pressure is normal (in fact a tad
lower than usual)-- 105 over 65 and my heart rate also was a tad lower than
usual -- 65ish rather than upper 70s. I did recently lower thyroid
medication a tad which has helped with insomnia but the transient
breathlessness scares the crap out of me. Went to the ER after one such
bout -- normal EKG and 100% on oxygen saturation test. My weight is about
at goal now although a few pounds less would be fine too -- I'm 5'2.5" and
108 pounds. Almost 42 year old female. Doc suggests I could try cutting my
thyroid meds down even further but I am hesitant to do so if the issue is
merely a sodium depletion issue. Also, I know it goes against
conventional "wisdom", but I do not force down 8+ cups of water every day.
More like 3 cups of water plus lots of green tea and 1 coffee. I am a
freak in that I do not like to drink while working out vigorously (just
afterwards) -- this horrifies my husband who constantly drinks fluids
during his workouts. Since I was a teenager, I never liked to fluids
during a run -- but just afterwards. I also don't seem to feel super
thirsty very often.
Thoughts on whether sodium depletion and/or mild dehydration can cause
breathlessness with NO increase in heartrate or bp??
