It's amazing how long this thread has gone before anybody looked it up
in a dictionary.  According to the Webster (look up "paleolithic" or
"Paleo-Indian" at www.webster.com) the first syllable is pronounced like
"pale" or "pal", the latter especially in Brittish.

In most other languages one doesn't pronounce single vowels as
diphtongs, but the quality of each vowel may vary.  In Norwegian it
would be pronounced more or less as PAH-leh-oo, but i guess pah-leh-aw
would be more typical for european languages (which syllable is stressed
may vary, though).
