>I'm a few days short of 50.
My husband is 51. We both have friends who have polio. At that time, I
would have immunized against it. Now, polio is almost extinct.

>uncommon. My mother told me that I almost died of whooping cough (pertussis)
>as an infant; that vaccine was not yet available.

I almost died of drowning one time and 75% of my body burned another time.
Almost doesn't count. There was a virus around this winter that was every
bit as bad as pertussis.

>Polio is a sinister disease. Adults who had polio as kids and seemed to have
>stabilized are now experiencing a resurgence and worsening of symptoms.

I know, but the adults I know who had it are all still very sharp minded,
even into their late '70s. I have been wondering if having polio causes
some protection against dementia.
