Excessive running or any aerobic activity may cause high levels of free
radicals to be produced in the body. I used to be a long-distance runner. I
can testify to what it can do to your body. Now I walk a lot, run sprints 2
or 3 times, a week, and do moderate strength training (no more than 30
minutes a day). My lean body mass has grown significantly without my
focusing on development very intensively. I undertook the paleo diet 8 years
ago. I stopped running about 4 years thereafter. Since giving up running,
I've gained 15 pounds. I look and feel much healthier. I'll never go back to
long-distance running, even though I miss it. In my case, the benefits of
giving it up far outweigh the downside (not getting "runner's high").
