It is a fascinating story.  And it's also interesting that with their children, Cain was a farmer and Abel a shepherd.  The first murder was committed after God rejected Cain's offering of grain but accepted Abel's "firstlings of the flock and fat."  Cain whupped ole Abel out of jealousy, as we might say here in Texas.

One other thing, the source word for "bread" in the Bible was often simply the generic word for "food."
