Well, as bad as 25-hydroxycholesterol sounds, I'd still rather eat canned
fish than no fish. Thank heaven for the tuna, the "Fish of Life"! :-)
It seems to me I have read, on this very list if I recall correctly, that
canned fish actually may have some advantages over commercial "fresh" fish.
The cannery ships process their catch right away, arresting decay, whereas
it may take fresh or fresh-frozen fish a few days to reach the seafood
counter at the grocery store, even a health-food grocery store with an
excellent fish department such as my local Whole Foods Market.
Of course, nothing beats a genuinely fresh-caught fish. I have a friend who
goes to Alaska every year and brings back a cooler of wild-caught,
home-smoked salmon from the stream that runs through her parents' back
yard...
Thanks for the info from Cordain et al. I will keep eating canned fish, but
I will now take an antioxidant with my ration of canned tuna, salmon,
sardines, mackerel, etc. ("Pill paleo"...)
Somewhat related: My friend gave me a can of "Kitty Kaviar", dried bonito
flakes that look rather like sawdust and are fine and thin enough to read
through. given that pet food is supposed to be manufactured according to
the same health standards as human food (hardly perfect, but still
something), I may wind up insisting that my cat share the treats with me!
My US$0.02.

P.S. A bit of OT bragging: Fellow listmembers in the US, Canada, and
northern Mexico can see me win on the game show "Jeopardy" tonight! You can
also watch me get second place (I had a cold that day...oh, well) on Monday
night. :-)
