Plain gelatin works very well.  Mix with twice amount of hot water,  let
it set to gel liquid and use away.  Keep in fridge up to 2-3 weeks.  If
it gets too thick,  he can microwave it for a few seconds to liquify
again.  One packet should last about that long.   My grandmother used to
use this to make finger waves in her hair.
