Reminds me of one time when I attended an Hispanic-oriented event here in
Albuquerque (keeping in mind that most "hispanics" here are Native Americans
and Mexicans). Most of the booths and many of the resulting give-away samples
revolved around: beer, cigarettes, cars, and disposable diapers... and the
food
booths featured typical "Mexican" food made with tortillas (mostly wheat
flour)
(me, I prefer corn the rare times I eat anything with a tortilla), fajitas
(with the meat fried in... what? lotsa canola and soy out there), curly fries,
green and/or red chili, and more beer. And no Hispanic-rights people were out
protesting any of this. Strangest thing.

Oh, and in reference to Native Americans and high rates of diabetes, a recent
local TV news article featured a Native (Laguna Pueblo, I think) woman who was
concerned about overweight and diabetes among NAs and that she is encouraging
everyone to exercise more.
