Vilhjalmur Stefansson discovered that pemmican (a raw meat preparation)
would cure scurvy.  He often used it on other artic explorers who had
been eating nothing but preserved foods and suffering the results.  He
recommended it because it kept better than the traditional lime juice
which looses its benifits when it goes bad.
