Not fully known yet.

Some studies have been done with green tea, and they weren't done with black
tea, so it is unclear whether the benefits are due to the "green-ness" or not.
Just a few small studies have given some indication that black tea has the same
benefits.

It is similar to the situation with studies done on "oat bran" and "wine", where
the researchers didn't use other brans, or non-alcoholic grape juice, so it is
unclear what the real source of the benefits are.

Although there are numerous theories in each case!

BTW, the only difference between green tea and black tea is that black tea is
fermented.
